A game a day with Erika: Game 3

Today, I am featuring my first 3D shooter game, Barbie Dream House Defender, a first-person 3D shooter.

This game was actually a great remix. It is currently sitting at 400k plays with a 1:11 median time. Even though it is a Barbie game, it is more of a fan-made game. This game also shocked everyone during office hours, and they thought it was an improvement over the first one.

As you progress through the game, you can unlock different collections. Weapons were still unlocked, but not as often, and I also added a whole dollhouse map. There were also different animated characters.

I also fixed the shop prices, and some animations were improved, which created much better progression. I was able to make the weapon feel more like Doom, further optimize the game, and ensure monsters arrived at a steady pace. There were also a lot more things for people to do throughout the game. It was actually more successful than my other game, my second 3D shooter.

One issue the game faced was that the waves felt a little too long at times. In the game, the collectibles were a bit harder to see, and the text overlapped in some areas and wasn’t fully centered. The dollhouse was fun and quirky, but there was a bit too much going on at times, and I would also stylize the shop icons better. But overall, it was a major improvement for the game itself.

If I had to redo the game again, I would make the waves a little shorter, change the shrapnel to look more like doll parts, fix the shop icons, and clean up the text, including overlapping elements. I would also make sure the furniture looks more organized and neater, and that nothing clips through the walls. But overall, it was a major improvement. A lot of things were fixed.

One of the things I learned is that it is very important to take feedback and improve your game, because in the previous one, the feedback was to improve the prices and how things looked, and I was able to do that in this game. It is also good to experiment with different elements and themes, so I thought about turning this into a different type of game with a different layout and theme, and it actually worked pretty well.

The last thing I learned was that even though this was my third 3D game, I was starting to enjoy making them. I made different versions and, with each one, tried to improve something, even though some did not perform as well as the previous ones. It was still fun to see how far I could push them, and getting feedback and having people playtest my games helped me make sure my games were more successful.

Be sure to follow and stay tuned, as tomorrow I will feature one of my newer, pretty successful games that I’ve been working on.
