A game a day with Erika: Game 2

Today, I am featuring my first 3D shooter game, Undead Onslaught, a first-person 3D shooter featuring zombies.

This was my second 3D game, and it shocked everyone during office hours at Astrocade since they were so used to me making girly/cake games. This game is currently sitting at 86.2k plays with a 1:08 median time.

The game itself was a bit more challenging than my cake game, but it had a great core and meta loop. As you progressed through the game, you were able to unlock new weapons and buy upgrades. People were having fun just killing zombies and progressing through the game.

One of the things that the game faced was, at times, slower progression. We did have zombies, but they came in smaller batches. Also, the animation ratio for attacks seemed a little squashed.

If I had to recreate the game again (which I did), I would focus on making the gun more like Doom, expanding the layout, making sure monsters come at an even pace, and fixing the animations. I would also make the prices in the shop more consistent. There are lots of other things I did fix, which I’ll cover tomorrow in Game 3.

One of the things I learned was that it’s very important to optimize your games since 3D games, or games with a lot of effects, can run poorly on older devices, which I did during this one.

The last thing I realized was that even though this was my second 3D game, making games like this one was not that hard to make. By going to office hours and having people test my games helped me improve this one and the sequel.
